I believe that music study is one of the most self-motivating, life affirming and enjoyable activities, and I strive to provide a positive and encouraging environment for all persons.

Shaughn’s students have:

  • Won or placed in their age group and category at Northern Virginia Music Teacher’s Association (NVMTA) Competitions
  • Auditioned for, been accepted in and (certain students) awarded principal chair in the Virginia Band and Orchestra Director’s Association (VBODA) All-Virginia Band and District Band
  • Auditioned for and been accepted in the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (AYPO) program
  • Auditioned for and been accepted in their local middle or high school primary bands or wind ensembles and (certain students) occupied principal chairs
Individual Lessons

Individual flute lessons are 30 minutes, 45 minutes or 60 minutes online or in-person.

Studio Recitals

Two studio recitals are held each year, once in the fall and once in the spring. Although not mandatory, each student is asked to participate in a joint recital followed by a reception for the students, family and friends. This “formal” musical event is held at a local church and involves performance and subsequent rehearsal time with an accompanist.

Group Classes

A group flute class is offered once a week and provides a wider range of musical experience to include:

• Solo and ensemble performances

• Basic theory (musical structure)

• Ear-training and sight-reading

• Musical challenge games

• Music history including musical styles through the lives and
works of the great composers

• Active listening and responding

Special Occasion Performances

Students may be requested to participate in additional group recitals throughout the year. These performances are generally held at one of the local retirement communities and/or assisted living facilities. Ensembles (such as our flute choir) and solo performances are interspersed in a more intimate and casual setting. Although not mandatory, students are encouraged to participate to foster community service.

Please contact Shaughn directly to discuss flute lessons, associated fees, policies and to answer any questions you may have.

Michelle is a rising junior who has played flute for 6 years. She enjoys trying out new things and going on trips with her family. She likes Romantic music and is slowly beginning to appreciate Baroque music as well!

Hi! I’m Olivia and I am going into my senior year at Yorktown. I’ve been playing the flute since fourth grade and have loved every minute of it, in and out of school. Playing an instrument is a wonderful talent to have, and it has helped me meet new people and experience new things.

This is Pasha at the Virginia Band and Orchestra Director’s Association (VBODA) District Band rehearsal. You can see how happy he is after all the hard work and preparation for the audition, to have been one of the flutists selected to participate! Pasha told me that what he loves best about music and learning to play the flute is performing with others as well as the spirit and camaraderie that he finds in his high school music program with his fellow musicians and friends.

Alexis came to me looking for a private instructor who could further hone her technical skills on the flute. Our first project together was a fast turnaround on a difficult piece that she was performing live, with a backing track for a competition. Alexis was able to successfully perform the piece, which helped her to win a local title with the Miss Virginia’s Outstanding Teen organization.

I am most impressed with her leadership skills, as demonstrated by her working with me on establishing the flute choir, Show the Flow, and lining up performances at senior living centers. Because of this and other volunteer work, Alexis earned a few President’s Volunteer Service Awards over the years. The culmination of her service work was earning one of the Tulane Community Service Fellowship seats with a scholarship and a commitment to serve the local community.

My name is Angie and I am currently a freshman at the College of William and Mary. I formerly studied in Mrs. Shaughn’s studio for 4 years. Music has been a part of my life since I was 4-years-old when I started playing the piano. It gave me a jump-start on learning the flute in the 5th grade. Since I started playing the flute I’ve been given opportunities to practice difficult repertoire and to give back to the community through retirement home performances. During my time at the studio, I’ve learned pieces from some of my favorite composers including Bach, Beethoven, and Telemann. One of my fondest memories was when Mrs. Shaughn and I decided to work on a set of duets for my senior year performance.

As a college student, I’ve had my fair share of stressful times and academic struggles. However, music has helped me with my stress management and has continued to be an outlet for my creativity.
